Searching for Dirt

I was determined to find some dirt to run today. Last night I explored mapmyrun, strava, and garmin for trails to run. I resigned myself to the fact that I would probably have to drive for a while to get there, but it would be worth it. When I arrived today, I wasn’t quite sure where to go. At the regional park where the trail starts, they had four signs at the entrance saying “No Park – Turnaround”. I still have no idea what the hell that means. No parking? No turnaround? Is the park closed (“no park today, folks”)? It turned out that the park was opened, so my confusion did not go away, but as are many parks, they close at dusk, and I didn’t want to deal with the park cops anyway, so I parked in a nearby neighborhood. I did find some dirt, but I don’t think I ran the trail I planned to run. Confusingly, right next to the regional park is a state park. But the state closes parks at every possible opportunity (in my experience), so of course it was close because we had some rain four days ago, and they claim it created “adverse conditions”. But I found another fire road in the regional park that satisfied my dirt search. I was even surprised to find a small grove of redwoods hidden in an ugly corner of Brea between an ugly dam and an ugly neighborhood. But the redwoods were nice, and I got a decent run in. I think I might try it again tomorrow, but I will run into the state forbidden zone. I’ll take my chances with the powerful arm of state law. Lastly, I ran for the second time in my new trail Newton Boco AT shoes. They are causing some discomfort in my arches, but I think that is ok. I think I’ll continue rotating through my minimal shoes (Inov8 TrailRoc 235) to my mid-range shoes (Newton Boco AT) to my maximal shoes (Asics Trail 2000). Maybe I’ll add a maximal shoe to the fray (Hoka?). But tomorrow I’m running in the Asics. 8 miles of “adverse condition” trails. Bing Map
